At Woodsetts Primary School, our Nursery provides a safe, nurturing and inspiring start to your child’s learning journey. We believe that every child deserves to feel happy, valued and excited to come to school each day — and our Nursery is a place where this truly comes to life.

A Caring and Supportive Environment

We know that starting Nursery is a big step for both children and families. Our experienced and caring staff take the time to build strong relationships with every child, helping them feel safe, settled and confident.

We prioritise:

  • Emotional wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging
  • Positive relationships with adults and peers
  • Developing independence and confidence
  • Clear routines that help children feel secure

🎨 Learning Through Play

In Nursery, children learn best through play, exploration and hands-on experiences. Our carefully designed environment offers rich opportunities for children to explore, create and discover.

Children have access to:

  • A stimulating indoor learning environment
  • A well-resourced outdoor area that promotes active learning
  • Open-ended resources that encourage imagination and creativity
  • Opportunities for both child-led and adult-guided learning

Through play, children begin to develop key skills in:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Early literacy and mathematics

📚 Building Strong Foundations for Learning

Our Nursery curriculum is carefully planned to ensure children develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for Reception and beyond.

We focus on:

  • Developing early communication and vocabulary
  • Listening, attention and understanding
  • Early mark making and a love of writing
  • Number sense and early mathematical thinking
  • Curiosity about the world around them

We follow guidance such as Development Matters and ensure our provision reflects the latest research, including a strong emphasis on play, talk and interaction.

🗣️ Developing Communication and Language

We place a strong emphasis on talk. Adults model language, ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations to help children build vocabulary and confidence.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Share ideas and experiences
  • Ask questions
  • Listen to others
  • Use new vocabulary in different contexts

🌿 Our Learning Environment

Our Nursery environment is thoughtfully designed to support learning across all areas. It includes:

  • Role play and imaginative areas
  • Creative and messy play spaces
  • Construction and small world play
  • Quiet reading and reflection areas
  • Outdoor learning spaces for exploration and physical development

We believe that the environment acts as a “third teacher”, supporting independence, curiosity and engagement.

🤝 Working in Partnership with Families

We value the important role that families play in a child’s development. We work closely with parents and carers to ensure every child gets the best possible start.

We provide:

  • Regular updates on your child’s learning and development
  • Opportunities to share achievements from home
  • Open communication with staff
  • Support and guidance where needed

⭐ Preparing for the Next Step

Our Nursery provides a strong foundation for a smooth transition into Reception. Children leave Nursery with:

  • Confidence and independence
  • Strong communication skills
  • Positive attitudes towards learning
  • The ability to play, explore and work alongside others

Places are subject to availability and eligibility. Parents/carers accessing 30 hours funded childcare must provide a valid eligibility code and ensure this is kept up to date. As we offer a longer school day, if your child is eligible for the 30 hours and you wish for them to stay for dinner and remain in school until 3.20pm, the additional charge is £2.00 for the dinner period.

Additional unfunded hours

Where families wish to access childcare beyond their funded entitlement, additional hours may be available, subject to staffing and availability. These hours are optional and are not a condition of accessing a funded place.

Additional unfunded childcare is charged at £14 per session e.g. either a morning or an afternoon.

Meals and packed lunch option

Children attending full day sessions will need a lunch. Families may choose from the following options:

Lunch option Charge
School meal provided by DOLCE £3.25
Packed lunch from home No charge

Parents/carers may choose to provide a packed lunch from home instead of purchasing a school meal. Choosing to provide a packed lunch will not affect a child’s access to their funded entitlement. School meals are booked and paid for via the School Grid online system.

Consumables and optional extras

From time to time, families may be asked for voluntary contributions towards optional extras such as special events, visits or additional experiences. Any such charges will be clearly explained in advance.

Parents/carers may also choose to provide their own consumables, such as nappies, wipes, sun cream or other personal care items, where these are needed.

Any charges for meals, consumables, additional hours or optional activities are voluntary and separate from funded entitlement hours. Families will not be required to pay for optional extras in order to access a funded place.

Invoices and transparency

Where charges apply, invoices will clearly distinguish between:

  • funded entitlement hours;
  • additional paid childcare hours;
  • food charges;
  • non-food consumables;
  • optional activities or extras.

Please contact the school office if you would like to discuss Early Years funded places, eligibility, session patterns or charges.
