Cultural Capital
At Woodsetts Primary School, we are committed to providing every child with a rich and meaningful range of experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Cultural Capital is about giving children the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand the world, find their voice and recognise their place within it. It is an essential part of preparing children not just for the next stage of education, but for life.
Why Cultural Capital Matters
Children grow through the moments they experience. Whether stepping into a theatre for the first time, working alongside an artist, exploring nature, or representing their school in the community, these experiences:
• Spark curiosity, imagination and ambition
• Build confidence, resilience and independence
• Develop empathy, teamwork and social understanding
• Strengthen communication and problem-solving skills
• Create shared memories that help children feel connected and proud of their school
We recognise that these opportunities should be available to all children, regardless of background. Our Cultural Capital Offer ensures that happens.
What We Do at Woodsetts
Our Cultural Capital experiences are embedded into our curriculum and enriched throughout the school year. Children take part in a wide range of experiences including:
• Professional Shakespeare drama workshops, led by a specialist teacher from one of our feeder secondary schools
• Participation in Rotherham’s “Picture This” art competition, with children’s work exhibited in the local gallery
• Educational visits linked to curriculum themes to bring learning to life
• Residential trips, helping pupils develop resilience, independence and teamwork
• Professional music tuition, enabling children to learn instruments and perform together
• Visitors, workshops and expert sessions, including authors, scientists, artists, historians and community leaders
• Outdoor learning and environmental projects, encouraging curiosity and care for the natural world
• Celebration of cultural and British traditions, such as Remembrance, Harvest, pantomimes and seasonal festivals
• Opportunities to represent the school, such as performances, competitions, sports events and public exhibitions
These are not one-off events; they form part of an ongoing journey of discovery and growth for every child.
Linked to Our Personal Development Offer
Our Cultural Capital Offer sits at the heart of our wider Personal Development curriculum. Through these experiences, children learn about themselves and others, develop values, practise leadership, and understand how they can contribute positively to their school, community and the wider world.
We teach children to be:
• Confident speakers and leaders
• Curious learners who ask thoughtful questions
• Responsible and respectful members of their community
• Empathetic and understanding of differences
• Ambitious for themselves and their futures
The Woodsetts Wonders (Woodsetts Guarantees)
To ensure every child benefits from a full and enriched education, we have created the Woodsetts Wonders: an outline of the key strands of our personal development offer. This includes the Woodsetts Guarantees which are the cultural, creative and wider world experiences that every child will have during their time at Woodsetts. These are carefully planned from Nursery to Year 6 so that each year builds on the last.
From performing on a stage…
to exploring historical sites…
to creating artwork for exhibition…
to leading on a school project…
Every child experiences moments that inspire pride, joy and a sense of achievement.
